Deva Fortress stands on a 378 m volcanic cone right above the town, where the Mureș squeezes between the Metaliferi and Poiana Ruscă mountains. It was built after the great Mongol invasion of 1241–1242, when the kings of Hungary replaced the old earth-and-timber strongholds with stone castles, and it is first mentioned in a document of 1269. Its position gave it control of the road along the Mureș valley, the main way into Transylvania from the west.

In the early 14th century the voivode Ladislaus Kán moved his residence and chancery here. In 1444 the fortress passed, with over 50 villages and the nearby gold mines, to John Hunyadi, and in 1579 Francis David, founder of the Unitarian Church, died in its prison. Prince Gabriel Bethlen added a bastion in the 17th century and built the Magna Curia palace at the foot of the hill, and between 1713 and 1719 the Habsburgs turned it into a bastion fortress.

On 13 August 1849, at the end of the Revolution, the powder magazine exploded and brought down much of the fortress, which was left as a ruin and a place for locals to stroll. The lower enclosures were consolidated in 2013–2016, and the upper enclosure reopened on 30 May 2024 after a restoration funded mostly by the EU.

Don't miss
  • The viewing platform on the east side of the upper enclosure, with Deva's old town and the Mureș valley below.
  • The ruins of the Princely Palace and the great and small cellars in the upper enclosure, rebuilt in the restoration completed in 2024.
  • The memorial room of Francis David, founder of the Unitarian Church, who died in the fortress prison in 1579.
  • The climb through the three enclosures, from Gate 1 up to the crest, past the bastion walls built by the Habsburgs.
  • The Magna Curia castle at the foot of the hill, built by Gabriel Bethlen and now the Museum of Dacian and Roman Civilisation.
