About Târgu Mureș Citadel

The citadel of Târgu Mureș is one of the largest fortified enclosures in Transylvania: some 4.3 hectares ringed by walls of brick and river stone, with seven bastions linked to one another. The first fortification was raised by Voivode Stephen Báthory in 1492, around the church and friary of the Franciscans who were already here. It was destroyed in 1601, in the troubled years of the campaigns of Giorgio Basta and Michael the Brave, and the townspeople began straight afterwards, in 1602, a new and much larger citadel, finished around the middle of the 17th century.

Each bastion was built and defended by a guild, and the names have stuck: the Tailors', the Butchers', the Coopers', the Tanners', the Furriers' and Locksmiths', plus the Gate Bastion and the Báthory Bastion. The Hungarian poet Bálint Balassi was held prisoner in the old fortress in 1575. After centuries of military use, the buildings became museums and cultural venues in the 1960s, and the enclosure was restored with European funds after 2011, giving it today's walls, paths and gardens.

Information verified on 20 October 2026.
