Constantin Brâncuși Memorial House in Hobița
About Constantin Brâncuși Memorial House in Hobița
Constantin Brâncuși was born in Hobița on 19 February 1876 into a peasant family and left the village at the age of 11. The museum in Hobița, founded in 1971 by the Gorj County Museum, is not quite the house where he was born: it is a wooden house from the second half of the 19th century, bought in the village from Calistrat Blendea, moved and rebuilt on the land that belonged to the sculptor's family, to show what a Gorj homestead of his time looked like. The house is a historic monument (LMI code GJ-IV-m-B-09494), and the museum belongs to the “Alexandru Ștefulescu” Gorj County Museum.
The house is made of oak logs, with a tall shingle roof and a long porch resting on posts carved in a twist and in “wolf's tooth” motifs. Many see this woodworking craft as one of the sources of Brâncuși's art, including the Endless Column.
What you can see
From the porch you enter the sleeping room, the cunia (the kitchen, with the hearth and a shelf for pots) and the celar, the pantry from which you climb into the attic. The interior is furnished in peasant style, with a bed covered in woven textiles, folk clothing hung on a pole, a loom and clay pots at the hearth. On the walls and in the display are photographs, albums, documents, books and letters from the sculptor's life and work.
In the yard are the homestead's outbuildings: log structures, a granary of woven wattle and a carved wooden gate with three openings.
Good to know
The house where Brâncuși was born, moved by his sister to another plot, stands nearby; it is private property and is not part of the museum. Do not confuse the museum in Hobița with the sculptural ensemble in Târgu Jiu, which is ~25 km away.
