Ecaterina Teodoroiu Memorial House
About Ecaterina Teodoroiu Memorial House
The Teodoroiu family house was built in 1884 in Vădeni, then a commune of its own and now a district of Târgu Jiu. Ecaterina Teodoroiu was born here on 14 January 1894, the third of the family's eight children. At the start of the First World War she exchanged a nurse's uniform for a soldier's after her brother Nicolae died at the front. She was awarded the Military Virtue medal and the honorary rank of second lieutenant, and in 1917 she fell at Mărășești at the head of her platoon.
The house became a memorial in 1938 and today belongs to the “Alexandru Ștefulescu” Gorj County Museum. It is a small building with a porch under a broad shingle roof, set in a yard reached by a narrow path between newer houses. The heroine is buried in the town centre, under a mausoleum from 1935, which is a separate attraction.
What you can see
The exhibition in the house gathers Ecaterina Teodoroiu's personal belongings, documents and photographs that tell her story: childhood in Vădeni, school, the war years and her wounds, her decorations. The outside is worth a look too: the porch with wooden posts, the river-stone plinth, the whitewashed walls and the shingles darkened by time.
The house is small, so the visit is short; you can combine it with the mausoleum in the centre and the Brâncuși ensemble in Târgu Jiu on the same trip.
