About Danube Promenade (Faleza Dunării)
At a glance: Parks and gardens in Galați, Galați County. Ticket: Free. The visit takes 1 – 1½ hours. Information verified on 10 October 2026.
The Danube Promenade (Faleza Dunării) is the main promenade of Galați and the place where locals come for a stroll, on the high bank of the river. It runs for some 3–3.5 km (the city hall and the press give figures between 3 and 4 km) over roughly 20 hectares, and the authorities present it as the longest promenade along the Danube. It has two levels: the upper promenade, on the crest of the bank, with a broad view of the river and the floodplain on the far shore, and the lower promenade, at water level, where the walking path and the moored boats are. The two are linked by monumental stairs.
What you can see
The lower promenade holds a group of monumental metal sculpture born of the international sculpture camps of 1976 and 1977 and a third edition in 1991. The works include "Capriciile Ielelor" ("The Whims of the Fairies") from 1976 and "Evoluție" ("Evolution"); from 1991 comes "Omagiu lui Brâncuși" ("Homage to Brâncuși") by the Dutch artist Ewerdt Hilgemann. Some were neglected for years, and the city hall wants to bring them into a cultural circuit. Boats and barges converted into restaurants are moored on the water, and beside the promenade, towards the centre, stands the statue of I.C. Brătianu. The promenade also hosts open-air concerts and races, and from here you can watch the ship traffic on the Danube.
Good to know
The promenade is a building site. The city hall signed the start order on 22 July 2026 for an investment of about 226 million lei (around 45 million euros), with European funding, and the works last 24 months, that is until 2028. From 3 August 2026 the lower promenade is closed to the public; according to the city hall's announcement, by the end of September the site was to extend to the monumental stairs area and the pavement on the upper promenade was to close. The project includes running, cycling and roller tracks, a lift for people with disabilities, a zip line, new viewpoints and the consolidation of the bank. I found no confirmation of the exact state of access in October 2026, so check before you come.
