About Haller Bastion
The Haller Bastion (in German, Hallerbastei) closes the south-eastern corner of Sibiu's fortifications, on Corneliu Coposu Boulevard. It was begun in 1551, in the time of Mayor Peter Haller, who gave it its name, when the town was strengthening its walls against the Ottoman threat. The design was by the Italian architect Alessandro Clippa, and the work was led by the master builders Peter Nürnberger and Georg Waahl.
The bastion was built to the Italian system of fortification of the 16th century. The brick walls, filled with earth to withstand artillery fire, are about 220 m long and up to 9 m high. In 1771 a riding school (manège) was built on the bastion, and in the first years of the 20th century the Neurology Hospital building. The walls were cleaned and consolidated in 2006 through a partnership between the City Hall and the German companies Kärcher and AeDis.
What you can see
From the boulevard you can see the curved wall of red brick, with a stone cordon about a metre below the top edge, placed to stop assault ladders from being propped against it, and the openings of the casemates for cannon, facing the Gros Tower and Manejului Street. On the wall are a plaque about the bastion and the historic monument marker, and above it rises the hospital building.

The bastion can be seen from the outside; the hospital operates above the walls, and the grounds are not open to visitors.
