About Teodoreni Monastery

Teodoreni Monastery, sometimes also called Todireni, stands in the Burdujeni district of Suceava, on the left bank of the river, facing the old fortress of the Moldavian princes. According to tradition a small wooden church from the time of Stephen the Great once stood on the spot; the stone church was raised in 1597 by the postelnic Teodor Movilă, half-brother of Prince Ieremia Movilă. The year is carved on the stone cap of the buttress at the altar, together with the abbreviated name of the master builder Constantin Batiște, the founder's brother-in-law.

The Church of the Ascension has a trefoil plan, an octagonal tower over the nave, walls over a metre thick and a band of blind niches under the eaves, clearly related to the Church of St Demetrius in Suceava. After the devastation of the Russo-Turkish war of 1769–1774 it was rebuilt in 1785, when it also received its oak and linden iconostasis, with Baroque and Rococo elements. The secularisation law of 1863 abolished the monastery and the church became a village parish; the cells burned down in 1917. The restoration and painting of the church, together with the rebuilding of the buildings in the precinct and of the walls, took place between 1986 and 1992, and in 1992 the monastery was re-established with a community of nuns.

Information verified on 14 October 2026.
