The Mărășești Heroes' Mausoleum stands on a hill on the edge of the town of Mărășești, right beside the national road between Bucharest, Focșani and Bacău, on the ground where the fighting of summer 1917 took place under the slogan "They shall not pass!". The idea came from the National Orthodox Society of Romanian Women, at its 1919 congress. The foundation stone was laid on 6 August 1923, and in 1924 the bones from the battlefield began to be reburied and General Eremia Grigorescu, commander of the First Army during the battle, was laid in the sarcophagus at the centre of the crypt. The crypts were inaugurated on 28 September 1924, in the presence of Queen Marie.

After a pause of 12 years the Cupola of Glory was built, and the monument was inaugurated on 18 September 1938 by King Carol II. The plans are by the architect George Cristinel (who won the competition together with Constantin Pomponiu), in a Neo-Romanian style: stone terraces rising to a round tower with a dome, with four granite eagles at its base. The bas-reliefs of the dome are by Ion Jalea and Cornel Medrea, and the interior painting by Eduard Săulescu. The frontispiece bears the inscription "Întru slava eroilor neamului" ("To the glory of the nation's heroes"), together with the names of the places where the great battles of the Romanian front were fought.

The monument is owned by Vrancea County Council and run by the Vrancea Museum; it is a listed historic monument (LMI code VN-IV-m-A-06631).
