Steam Locomotives Museum
About Steam Locomotives Museum
The Steam Locomotives Museum in Sibiu was inaugurated in August 1994 inside the CFR Locomotive Depot, right next to the railway station, on the grounds of the former depot that served the Sibiu–Agnita narrow-gauge line. The collection was put together by the engineer Radu Belu, who was then responsible for the heritage of the CFR Brașov Regional Division, from locomotives withdrawn from service across the country and even from Austria. Many of the exhibits are listed in the national movable cultural heritage.
The locomotives stand on tracks and in the grass, in the open air, between the sheds of a depot that is still at work. They were built between 1885 and the 1950s, at works in Romania (Reșița, "23 August" in Bucharest, Malaxa) and abroad (Henschel, Borsig, Schwartzkopff, Orenstein & Koppel, Floridsdorf and Wiener Neustadt in Austria, MÁV in Budapest, Škoda, Baldwin in the USA). The oldest date from 1885 and 1896 and came out of the Wiener Neustadt works.
What you can see
In front of you are mainline locomotives of every size and a few narrow-gauge "mocănițe". Among them is 40.004, built in 1908 at Floridsdorf, near Vienna, and used in the filming of the "Ardelenii" trilogy, and 150.1105, a massive German locomotive that appeared in Sergiu Nicolaescu's film "Ziua Z". There are also MÁV locomotives of the 375 series, built in Budapest in 1911, and one of the 324 series, with its tender.
Besides the locomotives, the museum has steam cranes, including an Ardelt built in 1924, and rotary snow ploughs, with a large red paddled disc whose mechanism is visible. Each locomotive carries its number plate on the front or on the cab, good to look for when photographing.
Good to know
The museum is in the yard of a working depot, so access is through the depot gate on Strada Dorobanților, and present-day locomotives also move on the tracks. The exhibits are rusty and in places covered by vegetation.
