The Crișuri Land Museum is the largest museum institution in Bihor, run by the county council. Its roots go back to the Archaeology and History Society of Bihor County, founded in 1872, and the first purpose-built museum in Oradea opened in 1896. From 1971 until the move it worked in the Baroque Palace, the former residence of the Roman Catholic bishops. Today its main seat is in a completely different building: the former Royal Cadet School, inaugurated on 4 October 1898, a monumental edifice with warm-coloured façades and relief decoration, taken over by the county council from the Ministry of Defence in 2006, restored and reopened to the public in October 2020, after the collections had been moved.
The holdings run past 450,000 items and cover almost everything western Romania has to show. The permanent exhibitions were opened one after another between 2020 and 2024, with modern, interactive museum design. Alongside them the museum runs temporary exhibitions all the time, from contemporary art to documents, toys and photography.
What you can see
Natural sciences has some of the most attractive galleries: Middle Triassic marine vertebrates (around 240 million years old) found at Peștiș and Lugașu de Sus, two reptile species first described here, Cretaceous dinosaurs and a collection of birds' eggs considered the largest in Central and Eastern Europe. Archaeology brings together ancient Egyptian pieces, painted Greek vases, pottery and bronzes of the Otomani culture, including material from the megaron temple at Sălacea, and Dacian and medieval finds from Oradea Fortress. The Lapidary shows medieval architectural fragments and gravestones, while the history section follows the modern and contemporary period, the history of photography and the history of pharmacy. The art section holds 20th-century Romanian painting and sculpture (Tonitza, Pallady, Petrașcu, Corneliu Baba, Paciurea, Jalea), and ethnography presents the costume, pottery, textiles and glass icons of five ethnographic areas of the Crișuri region.
The museum's vivarium, with aquariums and terrariums, is visited on a separate ticket.
Good to know
The Crișuri Land Museum is part of a complex with separate branches in other places: the memorial museums of Ady Endre, Iosif Vulcan and Aurel Lazăr, the Oradea City Museum (in the Fortress) and the Vadu Crișului Cave. The former seat in the Baroque Palace no longer houses the museum. The ticket for the permanent exhibitions is paid per exhibition, not once for the whole building. Wheelchair and pushchair access to the building is through the first inner courtyard, at the back, with the lift on the right.
