Circus Park
About Circus Park
Circus Park (also called Parcul Circul de Stat or Tonola Park) covers about 26 hectares in Sector 2, between Șoseaua Ștefan cel Mare, Barbu Văcărescu boulevard and Calea Lacul Tei. It was laid out in 1961 to plans by architect Valentin Donose, on the site of the former Tonola pit, left behind when clay was dug for Max Tonola's brickworks, founded in 1865. The lake in the middle of the park grew out of that pit. The park also contains the Globus Circus building, which gives it its name.
What you can see
The lake, fed by natural springs and almost round, measures around three quarters of a hectare and is known for its Egyptian lotuses, whose large leaves cover the water in summer, and for the European pond turtles that live here. Wide lawns run from the circus building down to the lake, and concrete paths lead among remarkable trees: ginkgo, plane trees and bald cypresses. Along the paths and among the shrubs there are also a few sculptures carved in dead trunks by the artist C. Teodorescu.
Good to know
Entry is free. The Globus Circus building is a neighbour of the park and is not part of a visit to the park; performances have separate tickets. The water level in the lake has fallen in recent years, so the look of the lake and the lotuses differs from season to season.
