About Predeal
Predeal is the highest town in Romania, lying at 1,030–1,110 m at the top of the Prahova Valley, right in the pass that separates Muntenia from Transylvania. The town rests on three massifs: Postăvaru, Piatra Mare and Bucegi. Until 1918 it was a frontier settlement between the Kingdom of Romania and the Habsburg Empire, and the building of the former border-guard post can still be seen today.
The settlement grew up with the Ploiești–Brașov railway and the border station, in the last decades of the 19th century. Older is Predeal Monastery, whose foundation is dated to 1774. Today the town lives from tourism: in winter it is a ski resort with a small ski area at the foot of Clăbucet, and in summer it is a starting point for hikes into the three massifs.
What you can see
The ski area is right next to the town. The four-seat Clăbucet chairlift climbs 1,657 m, from 1,060 m up to 1,448 m, at the Clăbucet Sosire chalet. The runs descend towards the town: Clăbucet, about 2 km long, with easy to medium gradients; Cocoșului, about 1.5 km long, steep and technical; and Subteleferic, about 2 km long, the only one lit for night skiing. The lifts are run by Teleferic Prahova (Genetrix) and also operate outside the ski season, according to a timetable, and from the top station the paths along the Clăbucet ridge begin.
Next to the Clăbucet run there is an 822 m summer toboggan, opened in 2025, which you can ride when there is no snow. In the centre, the church of Saints Constantine and Helena is worth a stop, and at the entrance from Brașov stands the statue of the poet Mihail Săulescu, who died on the Predeal front in 1916.
Good to know
The lifts run a reduced timetable outside the ski season, and the drag lift runs only when there is snow. The condition of the runs is updated daily at 9:00 on the operator's website. Children under 12 may ride the chairlift only if accompanied in every chair by an adult or an instructor. A new fixed chairlift is being installed on Clăbucet Sosire and Variantă, to prepare the ski area for the 2027 competitions.
