About Sinaia
Sinaia is a town and mountain resort in the Prahova Valley, at the foot of the Bucegi Mountains, at altitudes between 767 and 860 m. It grew up around the monastery founded at the end of the 17th century, which gave it its name, and from 1866, when Prince Carol I arrived here, it became the summer residence of the royal family; Peleș Castle was built between 1873 and 1883. The villas, hotels and buildings around the park date from the time when Sinaia was the elegant resort of the Kingdom.
Today the town lives from tourism all year round. In summer it is a starting point for the Bucegi plateaus, and in winter it has a ski area that climbs from Cota 1000 to Cota 2000, with 22 runs. Snow usually settles in November and melts between March and April.
What you can see
The centre of the resort is explored on foot. Dimitrie Ghica Park has paths, a fountain, a wooden gazebo and benches among old trees, and around it stand buildings from the early 20th century: the Casino (1912–1913), which can be visited on guided tours, the Caraiman Hotel (1911) and villas with decorative woodwork. Nearby, the former Știrbey Castle houses the Sinaia Town Museum, and the station keeps the building of the royal station.
From the town the Telecabina cable car climbs to Cota 1400. From there the Carp Gondola continues to Cota 2000, in the alpine zone, where the ski runs and the paths along the Bucegi ridge begin. Marked trails also start in the resort: the blue stripe to Omu Chalet, the red stripe through Șaua Vârfului cu Dor to Padina Chalet, and the blue dot to Piscul Câinelui Peak. Peleș Castle, Pelișor Castle and Sinaia Monastery lie 0.3–1 km from the park.
Good to know
The lifts have different timetables and stop in strong wind. The Sinaia Gondola (Cota 1000–1400) is currently not running for the public, so Cota 1400 is reached by the Telecabina from the town. The Casino can be visited from Wednesday to Sunday, only at tour times. Parking in the town is paid.
