About Semenic Resort
Semenic is a mountain resort in Caraș-Severin County, set at about 1,400 m on the high plateau of the Semenic Mountains, some 40 km from Reșița. Administratively it belongs to the commune of Văliug, and it is certified as a tourist resort of local interest. The mountain became a place for hiking and skiing after the First World War, when visitors from Reșița began to come up here, and the first tourist shelters were built in the 1930s.
In winter Semenic is a ski destination for people from the Banat, with easy and intermediate slopes served by drag lifts on the sides of Piatra Goznei Peak. In summer the plateau, with its meadows and spruce and beech forests, is a starting point for hikes in the Semenic – Caraș Gorge National Park.
What you can see
The resort's hotels, guesthouses and chalets are grouped on the plateau beneath Piatra Goznei Peak (1,447 m), the highest point of the range, topped by a telecommunications relay that can be seen from far away. The slopes run down the sides of the peak: Goznuța and Crucea de Brazi, right next to the resort, and the longer Slalom Uriaș, to the north-west. When there is enough snow, you can also ski down the forest road of about 6 km that links the resort with Văliug.
On the edge of the resort lies Lacul Vulturilor, a small mountain lake. Waymarked trails of the national park start from the resort: the red cross towards Comarnic Cave (13.9 km) and the blue dot towards Cuptoare.
Good to know
The lifts on the slopes have different operators and only run when there is enough snow, mostly at weekends; the drag lift at Crucea de Brazi was stopped after its cable broke. Reșița City Hall, together with Caraș-Severin County Council and Văliug City Hall, is building a new ski area with a gondola, about 15 km of slopes and snowmaking: the snowmaking network and the storage lake are finished, the gondola is not. The DJ582E road from the Prislop Pass is cleared of snow, but in blizzards it may be closed temporarily.
