Tudor Vladimirescu Memorial House in Vladimir
About Tudor Vladimirescu Memorial House in Vladimir
The house in the village of Vladimir, in the hills of south-eastern Gorj, is where Tudor Vladimirescu, the leader of the 1821 Revolution, was born in 1780. His family were moșneni, free peasants; he learned to read from the village priest, then left for Craiova and Cloșani, where he was a vătaf de plai (district administrator) from 1806.
The building you see today is not the old house untouched: in 1932, through the efforts of the Gorj branch of the National League of Romanian Women, led by Aretia Tătărescu, the house was rebuilt entirely from an original photograph of the dwelling, to a design by the architect Iuliu Dopplereiter, with the architecture of around 1800. It is a historic monument (LMI code GJ-IV-m-B-09505) and belongs to the “Alexandru Ștefulescu” Gorj County Museum.
What you can see
The house is a modest Gorj-style building of logs, with a wooden porch and a shingle roof. The two rooms where Tudor lived display items of clothing, old furniture, household objects and documents linked to his life and his native region. A wooden panel fixed to the wall of the house says that Tudor Vladimirescu was born here. The grassy yard is ringed by a wooden fence and wooded hills, and a statue on a stone plinth stands near the house.
Good to know
Do not confuse it with the Tudor Vladimirescu Tower House in Cerneți (Mehedinți), a separate attraction.
