About Argamum Citadel

Argamum, called Orgame in Greek, was founded in the middle of the 7th century BC by settlers from Asia Minor on Cape Doloșman, where the Babadag Plateau slopes down to Lake Razim. At the time Razim was an open gulf of the Black Sea, the Argamon gulf, and the town lived from trade and fishing. Its name is mentioned by Hecataeus of Miletus in the early 6th century BC.

In the 1st century AD the settlement came under Roman rule and became Argamum, a port of call on the route between Byzantium and Tyras. A sand bar gradually closed off the gulf and turned it into a lagoon that no longer admitted large ships. In late antiquity the city shrank back behind a fortress of about 2.5 hectares, rebuilt in the time of Emperor Justinian, with walls, towers and gates. It was abandoned later.

Vasile Pârvan identified the site in 1916, and systematic research began in 1926 and continues to this day. The ancient city spreads over about a hundred hectares, but most of it is still buried under the fields.

Information verified on 29 October 2026.
