Pădureni Reformed Church
About Pădureni Reformed Church
Pădureni (Erdőcsinád in Hungarian) is a village in Gornești commune, Mureș County, recorded in documents as early as 1332. The community, Catholic in the Middle Ages, adopted the Reformed faith in the 16th century. The old church was pulled down in 1783 because it was in poor condition, and the present church was built in its place to plans by the architect Anton Türk, also known for his work on the Unitarian church in Cluj. The sources disagree on the exact dates: one gives the work as 1783 to 1789, another considers the church finished in 1797.
The founders are held to be Ferenc Szutsaki of Pădureni and his wife Klara Kabos, who carried the work on after her husband's death. The church is large for a village of about 400 inhabitants and has valuable movable heritage, which makes it representative of the Hungarian churches of Mureș County.
What you can see
From the street you see the white tower, with a clock and an onion-shaped dome clad in tin, rising above the red roof of the nave, and on the south side a small entrance porch. Inside are the plastered ceiling with relief ornament, the gallery with its wooden balustrade and the columns with white capitals. The octagonal pulpit is dated 1761 and was made by Dávid Sipos, and its inscription mentions the founders. The organ, with eight stops, was built in 1847 by Samuel Binder of Sighișoara, the carved wooden communion table dates from 1868 and was restored in 2018, and the tower holds two bells, the oldest dated 1733.
