Lutheran Church in Herina
About Lutheran Church in Herina
The Lutheran church in Herina, dedicated to Saint Peter, is one of the best-preserved Romanesque buildings in northern Transylvania. It was built between 1250 and 1260 by Benedictine monks as a monastic church, and it can be seen from far away on the hillside above the village. A Saxon community lived in the village, which is known in German as Münzdorf.
The building is a basilica with three aisles, two towers at the west end and a semicircular main apse. Almost all of the walling is brick; stone appears only in carved details such as the frames of the west and south portals and the columns of the paired windows. After the Reformation the church passed to the Lutheran community and the interior was altered, but the medieval plan survived almost unchanged. In the history of Transylvanian architecture it is regarded as a close relative of the church at Acâș and as a forerunner of the monastic churches of western Hungary.
What you can see
The west façade, with its two towers, the friezes of brick arcading and the paired windows with stone columns, is the most photographed view. From outside you can also see the south portal, with its rounded arch, and the side apses, which are square on the outside. Inside, the coffered ceiling of 1748 and a Gothic tabernacle niche from the second half of the 15th century are preserved.
