Reformed Church on Ulița Lupilor
About Reformed Church on Ulița Lupilor
The Reformed Church on Ulița Lupilor (Hungarian: Farkas utcai református templom, also called the Central Reformed Church) is a Gothic hall church built for Franciscan friars. The first records of its construction date from 1486: the town had given the Franciscans the plot next to the Tailors' Bastion (Bastionul Croitorilor), and the work was supported by King Matthias Corvinus. After the Reformation the Franciscans left and the building passed to the Jesuits; in 1603 a crowd attacked it and most of the vault collapsed. In 1622 Gabriel Bethlen gave the church to the Reformed community, and Prince George Rákóczi I rebuilt it between 1638 and 1645; it was consecrated on 30 June 1647.
The exterior is of exposed stone, with massive buttresses, and has no tower: the one planned on the south side of the choir was pulled down because of weak foundations, and the bell ended up in a bell tower beside the church. In front of the west façade stands the statue of St George, a copy of 1904 of the statue in Prague cast in 1373 by the Cluj brothers Martin and George; it was moved here in 1961.
What you can see
The interior has a single nave, covered by the star vault rebuilt in the 17th century with craftsmen who came from Courland. The hexagonal stone pulpit dates from 1646, and the pews are also from the time of the rebuilding. The neo-Gothic gallery at the entrance was added in the restoration of 1910–1913, together with the Angster organ of 1913, whose older upper part dates from 1766. A collection of coats of arms of noble families hangs on the walls, and the church holds the tombs of Michael Apafi I, Prince of Transylvania, and of Michael Apafi II, with their wives, moved here in 1942 beneath a monument designed by Károly Kós.
Good to know
The church belongs to the Kolozsvár-Belváros Reformed parish and is in use, so visiting takes account of services. Outside opening hours, a visit can be arranged in advance with the parish office.
