St Michael's Roman Catholic Church, Cluj-Napoca
About St Michael's Roman Catholic Church, Cluj-Napoca
St Michael's Roman Catholic church dominates Piața Unirii (Union Square), once the Great Square of Cluj, and is one of the town's most important Gothic churches. Its construction is tied to the privileges King Charles Robert granted Cluj in 1316, among them the free choice of the priest. The oldest surviving document, from 1349, grants indulgences to those who helped pay for the works, and the coat of arms of Emperor Sigismund above the portal shows that they were finished in his time, between 1419 and 1437. From 1545 the church passed in turn to the Protestants and then to the Unitarians, and in 1716 it returned to the Catholics by Habsburg decision. Some fifty diets of Transylvania were held within its walls, and in 1607, 1608 and 1613 the princes Sigismund Rákóczi, Gabriel Báthory and Gabriel Bethlen were elected here.
It is a hall church with three naves, the nave 50 m long and 24 m wide, and a choir 20 m long. Its axis is not parallel to the sides of the square, because the altar was oriented towards the point where the sun rises on St Michael's Day. The present Neo-Gothic tower was begun in 1837 and finished in 1859; it is 76 m high (80 m with the cross) and can be seen from all over the centre. The Baroque tower before it had been pulled down in 1763 after an earthquake.
What you can see
The west portal carries the coats of arms of King Sigismund as German emperor, King of Hungary and King of Bohemia, and above them stands the statue of St Michael. Inside, rib vaults rise above tall pillars, and in the Schleunig chapel, in the south-west corner, the church's most important frescoes of the 15th century are preserved. The Baroque pulpit was made by Johannes Nachtigall and Anton Schuchbauer, the Neo-Gothic altar by the carpenter Lajos Back won a prize at the 1873 World's Fair in Vienna, and the organ was built in 1763 by Johannes Hahn of Sibiu and enlarged after 1990. Beneath the tower is the Holy Cross chapel, and in the church garden, since 2009, stands the statue of Bishop Márton Áron, who spoke out here in 1944 against the persecution of the Jews.
