Dormition of the Theotokos Metropolitan Cathedral, Cluj-Napoca
About Dormition of the Theotokos Metropolitan Cathedral, Cluj-Napoca
The cathedral stands in Avram Iancu Square, in front of the National Theatre, and is the main church of the Archdiocese of Vad, Feleac and Cluj and of the Metropolis of Cluj, Maramureș and Sălaj, dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God. It was conceived as the first monumental building in the Romanian style after the Great Union of 1918. The initiative came from Bishop Nicolae Ivan, who obtained the park in front of the theatre for it; the design, chosen through a competition, is by the architects Constantin Pomponiu and George Cristinel.
The foundation stone was laid on 7 October 1923, and the cathedral was consecrated on 5 November 1933, in the presence of Patriarch Miron Cristea and King Carol II. The building has a reinforced-concrete frame clad in hewn stone, a triconch plan raised on a high plinth and two towers on the main front. Above the nave rises a tall drum with a broad dome, ringed on the outside by a gallery of 18 massive columns. The economic crisis of the 1930s halted part of the work; four smaller towers around the great dome, the stone arches on the side fronts and the carved medallions were only completed between 1997 and 2000, together with the restoration of the exterior.
What you can see
At the entrance, under the arcades of the portico, are carved capitals with birds and mosaics of Jesus Christ and Saint John the Baptist. Inside, side balconies flank the narthex and the nave, and the iconostasis, covered in silver leaf and decorated with Brâncoveanu motifs, was carved by Moise Șchiopu to a design by the painter George Russu. Since 2001 the interior has been receiving iconography in mosaic, begun by the painter Virgil Moraru in the sanctuary, on the arch above the solea, in the two apses of the nave and in the icon of the patronal feast. The large chandelier in the nave was donated by Carol II, and the small one in the narthex by Patriarch Miron Cristea. In the crypt beneath the cathedral are buried hierarchs of Cluj, among them Metropolitan Bartolomeu Anania.
Good to know
The cathedral is a listed historic monument (LMI code CJ-II-m-B-07354) and a working place of worship, with services every day. A European-funded rehabilitation project, begun in 2024 and planned over five years, covers strengthening the structure, restoring the exterior and the interior spaces, continuing the mosaic and opening the galleries above the nave and the tower to visitors; preparatory work is under way around the cathedral, including the felling of some trees.
