About Panait Istrati Memorial House
At a glance: Museums and memorial houses in Brăila, Brăila County. Opening hours: Monday–Tuesday closed, Wednesday–Sunday 09:30 – 16:00. The visit takes 30 min. Information verified on 10 October 2026.
Panait Istrati was born in Brăila on 10 August 1884, to a Romanian mother and a Greek father, and in the 1920s became one of the most translated writers of his day, with novels written mostly in French ("Kyra Kyralina", "Uncle Anghel", "Codine", "The Thistles of the Bărăgan"). Brăila is the city of his books. But none of the houses he lived in here has survived, so the museum could not be set up in one of them.
Today's building, in the Public Garden, was originally the gardener's house: a dwelling with exposed-brick façades, stucco ornaments and fretwork wooden eaves, built in the second half of the 19th century (sources give slightly different dates) and listed as a historic monument (LMI code BR-IV-m-B-02157). The memorial house was inaugurated on 10 August 1984, on the writer's centenary; after the restoration of Brăila's historic centre it reopened on 16 April 2011. It belongs to the Brăila "Carol I" Museum and is part of its Memorials section.
What you can see
The exhibition brings together manuscripts, signed books, rare and first editions, documentary photographs, furniture and the writer's personal belongings: his hat, pipe, glasses, desk set, bag and shoes, plus a samovar he brought back from Soviet Russia. Most of the objects were bought from his last wife, Margareta Istrati. In the attic there is a documentation fund for those who study his life and work.
The exterior alone is a reason to stop: the red house with white trim shows through the trees and paths of the Public Garden.
Good to know
It is not Panait Istrati's birthplace, nor a house he lived in; it is a house-museum set up in a building in the park. I found no closure announcements in recent months, but the hours on the museum's website are undated and other sources give different times.

The house has no car park of its own; park on the streets around the Public Garden, where in the centre you usually pay. It is a few minutes' walk from Traian Square.
- Fees & discounts
Entry is paid, but I found no current price in an official source: the museum's rates are set each year by the Brăila County Council (Decision 230/2025, annex 16, which is not published as text), and an older tourist listing gives 4 lei per person. Check at the house or by phone.
- Rules
Entry is by ticket. As in any memorial house with period objects, exhibits must not be touched, and photography or food and drink may be restricted: follow the staff's instructions. The Public Garden is an open park, with the usual rules on conduct and cleanliness.
