Casa Mureșenilor Museum
About Casa Mureșenilor Museum
Casa Mureșenilor stands on the north-west side of Piața Sfatului, at number 25, and is dedicated to the Mureșianu family. For more than half a century the Mureșenis ran "Gazeta Transilvaniei", the Romanian-language newspaper that began appearing in Brașov in 1838, and corresponded with the leading political figures of their time, in Transylvania and in the other Romanian-inhabited provinces. A plaque on the façade recalls that the composer Iacob Mureșianu (1857–1917) was born here.
The museum opened in 1968, when the family's descendants donated the building, a collection of furniture, paintings and sculpture, and an archive of more than 25,000 documents, fulfilling Iacob Mureșianu's cultural testament. Since 1998 it has been an autonomous institution under the Brașov County Council. The archive brings together political correspondence, manuscripts by the Mureșenis and by contributors to their newspapers, and documents on the history of the national anthem "Deșteaptă-te, române!", whose words were written by Andrei Mureșanu; a banner on the façade also carries the title "National Anthem Museum".
What you can see
The museum keeps furniture, paintings and sculpture from the family collection, plus the few authentic traces of Andrei Mureșanu's life: his baptism certificate, the volume "Din poesiile lui Andreiu Mureșanu", a photographic portrait, a photograph of his birthplace in Bistrița and the manuscript of the poem "Un răsunet". The "Gheorghe Dima" hall is dedicated to the Brașov composer, conductor and performer (1847–1925), and the house's programme includes temporary exhibitions, workshops for children and classical music recitals, usually on Wednesdays at 5 pm.
Good to know
The museum also has a separate branch, the "Ștefan Baciu" House, at Strada Dr. Gheorghe Baiulescu 9, opened in 2006, with its own hours. This page describes only the house on Piața Sfatului. The Black Church and the rest of the square are a few steps away.
