Brașov Art Museum
About Brașov Art Museum
The Neo-Baroque building on Bulevardul Eroilor was put up in 1902 to plans by the Brașov architect Moritz Wagner for the Brașov Craftsmen's Association (Kronstadt Gewerbevereinhaus). Its façade, in brick-red tones with white stucco around the windows and the year 1902 above the entrance, looks onto the Central Park. The museum was founded in 1949 as a section of the regional museum and first operated on the upper floor of the Council House. It has been in today's building since 1970 and since 1 June 1990 it has been an independent institution, under the Brașov County Council.
The holdings number over 4,500 cultural objects: easel painting, graphic art (over 1,000 works), sculpture, decorative art, icons, tapestries and Oriental carpets. The collections are representative of modern and contemporary Romanian art and of Transylvanian art of the 16th–20th centuries.
What you can see
The main exhibition, the Romanian Art Gallery, fills the six rooms on the upper floor and brings together over 100 works of painting and sculpture, in chronological order. It begins with portraits of Brașov patricians from the 18th century, continues with the first Transylvanian landscapes and with academic painting, has a section devoted to Nicolae Grigorescu and reaches the avant-garde, with artists such as Hans Mattis-Teutsch. Among those represented are also Ștefan Luchian, Ion Andreescu, Theodor Pallady, Nicolae Tonitza, Iosif Iser, Corneliu Baba and many Brașov artists of the 19th–20th centuries.
The ground-floor rooms host temporary exhibitions and cultural events: concerts, book launches, conferences, workshops for children.
Good to know
The Romanian Art Gallery is on the upper floor; wheelchair users go up by a tracked stair lift, without booking on Wednesday–Friday between 10:00 and 14:00 and otherwise with booking 3 days ahead.
