Brașov Ethnographic Museum
About Brașov Ethnographic Museum
The Brașov Ethnographic Museum is devoted to the rural culture of south-eastern Transylvania, from the ethnographic areas of Bran, Rupea, the Olt Land, the Hârtibaciu Valley and the Burzenland (Țara Bârsei). It was founded in 1990 as an independent institution, taking over the work of the ethnography section created in 1967 within the Brașov Regional Museum, which had been formed in 1950 from the collections of the Saxon Museum of the Burzenland and of the ASTRA Association Museum.
The Brașov premises, on Bulevardul Eroilor, are in the annex of the Art Museum building, with the entrance through the right-hand end of the neo-Baroque façade built in 1902. This page is about these premises; the museum's branches on Piața Sfatului (the Museum of Urban Civilisation), in Săcele and in Rupea are visited separately.
What you can see
The permanent exhibition in the central pavilion has an educational character and follows a craft common to all the ethnographic areas: weaving, with its role in furnishing the home and in folk costume. Through specific tools, technologies and products, the exhibition rebuilds the context of village life.
The rooms hold looms, towels, pillows and blankets with traditional motifs, bags, archive photographs and a large industrial Jacquard loom. Folk costumes are shown on mannequins, alongside photo panels and a video screen about traditional dress. Individual visitors receive a free audio guide for the permanent exhibition at the entrance.
