About Martinuzzi Castle

On the left bank of the Mureș, next to the fortified church of Vințu de Jos, stand the walls of one of the most important Renaissance castles in Transylvania. The site has a history going back to around 1300, when a Dominican monastery was founded here, the only one in the province built outside a town. After 1534 the nobleman Nicolae Kozar turned it into a castle.

Between 1546 and 1551 Cardinal George Martinuzzi, governor of Transylvania, extended it in Renaissance style; the stone door and window frames are attributed to the architect Domenico da Bologna. On the night of 16–17 December 1551 Martinuzzi was murdered here by the mercenaries of General Castaldo. After 1614 Prince Gabriel Bethlen had it turned into a fortress with corner bastions, to plans by the Italian Giacomo Resti; an inscription on the gate gives the year 1617.

Fires and Turkish-Tatar attacks in the 17th century, a blaze in 1792, demolitions in 1932 and use as a store under communism left a ruined monument. The north side collapsed in 1981. The castle belongs to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Alba Iulia, which in 2024 obtained funding from the National Heritage Institute for the restoration documentation and a future cultural centre.

Information verified on 13 October 2026.
