Cetate Synagogue
About Cetate Synagogue
The Cetate Synagogue stands on Strada Mărășești, at no. 6, in the historic centre of Timișoara. It was built in 1863–1865 for the Neolog Jewish community, to plans by the Viennese architect Carl Schumann, and inaugurated on 19 September 1865. In 1872 Emperor Franz Joseph I attended a reopening of it. The hall seats 744: 424 on the ground floor, for men, and 320 in the galleries, for women.
When most of the community left, services stopped in 1985. In 2001 the building was leased for 50 years to the Banatul Philharmonic as a concert hall, and a concert in September 2005 reopened it to the public. Rehabilitation works began in December 2017, and on 6 May 2022 the synagogue reopened as a place of worship, after almost four decades. Today it is run by the Jewish community and hosts services, concerts and other cultural events.
What you can see
The main façade, in an eclectic style with Moorish motifs, has two octagonal towers with bulbous domes and a wall of yellow and red brick laid in diamonds, with a border of blue glazed ceramic. At the centre is a large coloured-glass rose window with a six-pointed star. The windows are arched, in the neo-Romanesque manner. Inside, at events, you can see the blue vaults with geometric patterns, the galleries on cast-iron columns and the organ.
Good to know
The building can be seen well from the street. The interior opens for services, concerts and other events, and the city includes the synagogue in some guided tours of its Jewish heritage.
