About Timișoara National Theatre and Opera

The building known as the Palace of Culture (Palatul Culturii), on the north side of Piața Victoriei, houses four institutions: the “Mihai Eminescu” National Theatre, the Romanian National Opera, the German State Theatre and the “Csiky Gergely” Hungarian State Theatre. The National Theatre is the city's first professional theatre, founded in October 1945, and the Opera was founded by royal decree on 30 March 1946; its first performance was “Aida”, on 27 April 1947.

The building was designed by the Viennese architects Fellner and Helmer, in Renaissance style, and opened on 22 September 1875. Two fires devastated it, in 1880 and in 1920; after the second only the side wings were left intact, and Duiliu Marcu rebuilt the auditorium and the main façade in the neo-Byzantine style. Between 1934 and 1936 he raised the façade with a travertine-clad “triumphal arch”, the one seen today. The restoration of the main façade took place between 2019 and 2022.

Information verified on 29 October 2026.

Don't miss
  • The travertine façade with its triumphal arch and loggia with columns, raised by Duiliu Marcu between 1934 and 1936, seen from Piața Victoriei.
  • The Hall of Columns, a circular space with eight columns with capitals decorated with floral motifs and masks.
  • The upstairs Hall of Mirrors, with marble, large crystal mirrors and frescoes by Theodor Kiriakoff.
  • The Main Hall, in the Italian-box style, with Ovid's gilded Latin epigram on the central box and the inscription “Mundus scena” on the proscenium arch.
  • The Revolution Balcony of December 1989, opened by the theatre's actors so that the revolutionaries could get their message out.

Getting there

By car: the building is in central Timișoara, with the public entrance from Piața Victoriei, ~2.8 km from Gara de Nord (~5 min) and ~17 km from Traian Vuia Airport (~40 min, depending on traffic). The square area is pedestrianised, so leave the car in a nearby car park.
