About Ulmetum Fortress
Ulmetum is a Roman-Byzantine fortification in the heart of Dobruja, on the eastern edge of the village of Pantelimon, on a plateau bounded by the valley of the Pantelimon stream and by a ravine. The spot was a crossroads: here the road that crossed the province from Marcianopolis towards Noviodunum met the links between the coast and the Danube. The fortress was completed in the reign of Emperor Theodosius I (379–395), on the site of a road station and a Roman village, and it had two periods of occupation: until about 470–480, then, after the rebuilding under Justinian I, until around the year 600. Its inhabitants included Roman soldiers and Gothic foederati with their families.
Vasile Pârvan's excavations of 1911–1914 uncovered the enclosure wall, the gates and the towers, and his reports were the first monograph study of a Roman site in Dobruja. The National History and Archaeology Museum of Constanța resumed research in 2004. The site is a listed historic monument (LMI code CT-I-s-A-02726).
What you can see
The enclosure has an irregular trapezoidal plan, covers about 2 hectares, and has 13 towers and two large gates, facing south-west and north-west; the north-west gate was walled up at some point. Towards the exposed sides the earth rampart and the defensive ditch can still be partly seen. In the south-east corner is the early Christian basilica, with three aisles (26 × 13 m), preserved only in its foundations, and in the central area stands the apsed building conventionally called the praetorium. In the centre of the fortress the tomb of a Germanic nobleman was also found, something unusual for an age when the dead were buried outside settlements.
Good to know
The site is in the open, with low ruins and no developed tourist facilities, so the visit works better with some reading beforehand. The "România Atractivă" programme includes Ulmetum in its Route of Fortresses and marks it "temporarily closed" without giving a reason; no announcements about works have been found. The administrator, the National History and Archaeology Museum of Constanța, lists it among the sites you can visit but publishes no schedule or ticket price for it. Phone the museum before you set out.
