About Holy Cross Chapel of Sibiu

The Roman Catholic Holy Cross Chapel, known in the town as the "Silver Bell" (Clopoțelul de Argint), stands on Piața 1 Decembrie 1918, next to the railway station. The small yellow-and-grey building with its bell turret was raised in 1755 to shelter a monumental stone crucifix of 1417, the work of the Austrian master Peter Lantregen.

The crucifix originally stood in the church of a Dominican monastery outside the town walls, built in the 13th century. After the old church was burned and demolished, the cross lay fallen under the rubble until 1683, when the town council had it raised again. In 1755 the Transylvanian councillor Martin Wankel von Seeberg ordered a chapel to be walled up around it, in the form that can still be seen today. The chapel has been a listed monument since 1954, and for more than 50 years it was looked after by the community of Poles who had taken refuge in Sibiu from Bessarabia and Bukovina.

Information verified on 5 November 2026.
