Roșia Montană Gold Mining Museum
About Roșia Montană Gold Mining Museum
The Gold Mining Museum in Roșia Montană is the place where you can go down into the Roman galleries of ancient Alburnus Maior. It opened in 1981 to mark 1,850 years since the wax tablet of 6 February 131, the oldest written record of the settlement and of mining here. The museum stands within the grounds of the former state mine and is run by the state company Minvest Deva through its Roșiamin branch.
The galleries in the Orlea massif are a historic monument of exceptional national value and part of the Roșia Montană Mining Landscape, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2021 and, at the same time, placed on the list of sites in danger. Of the more than 7 km of Roman galleries documented in the area, the stretch in the museum is the only one fitted out for visitors. In 2022 the stairs, walkways, support posts and lighting were repaired through the "Historic Monuments Stamp" programme, with volunteers from the Roșia Montană in World Heritage Association.
What you can see
From the portal bearing the inscription "Alburnus Maior" you descend an inclined passage 53 m long, with 157 steps and a handrail, roughly ten storeys. Below, you walk through 170 m of original Roman galleries on two levels, lit by electric lamps: they are about 1.8 m high, 1.7 m wide at the base and only 1 m at the top, the trapezoidal profile typical of Roman workings. You return the same way.
On the surface, an open-air exhibition shows how the ore was processed: wooden stamp mills, iron stamp mills used until 1948 and a flotation plant from the 1960–2006 period. The lapidarium holds Roman funerary stelae and votive altars found in the commune, and a former office building houses the "Aurarii" collection of about 150 black-and-white photographs taken by Iosif Bazil Roman up to 1948.
Good to know
The gallery is visited in groups of at least 5 people, so there may be a wait for a group to form. Underground it is 7–10 °C all year with humidity above 85%: bring a jacket and good shoes. The galleries are low and narrow, unsuitable for anyone with walking difficulties or who dislikes enclosed spaces. The village, the mining ponds and the rest of the mining landscape are described on the Roșia Montană page.
