The Palace of Culture dominates the centre of Iași with its long façade and 55 m central tower, built on the site of the Princely Court of Moldavia, recorded from 1434, and of the princely palace put up here by Alexandru Moruzi in the early 19th century and rebuilt by Mihail Sturdza. Today's building was designed by the architect Ion D. Berindey and built between 1906 and 1925 as the Palace of Administration and Justice; it was inaugurated in October 1925 in the presence of King Ferdinand and Queen Marie.
The style is a romantic Neo-Gothic with Neo-Baroque touches, but technically the building was, for its time, ultra-modern: electric lighting, central heating, ventilation and even a built-in vacuum-cleaning system. It has 298 rooms, and the tower holds three clock faces 3.25 m across, with stained glass showing the signs of the zodiac, and an eight-bell carillon that plays "Hora Unirii" every hour. In 1955 the building became the Palace of Culture, home of the "Moldova" National Museum Complex; between 2008 and 2016 it underwent a complete restoration, during which it was closed to the public.
Four museums of national standing share the roof: the Art Museum, the History Museum of Moldavia, the Ethnographic Museum of Moldavia and the "Ștefan Procopiu" Science and Technology Museum. You can buy a ticket for just one of them or a combined ticket for all four.
What you can see
You enter through the Hall of Honour, a white hall with pointed vaults and two tiers of galleries, with a circular floor mosaic, the "Gothic Bestiary", of fantastic animals arranged in concentric rings after the rose window of the abbey of Saint-Pierre-sur-Dives in Normandy. The grand staircase is guarded by stone eagles and lit by tall stained-glass windows. Upstairs, the Voivodes' Hall, the palace's most imposing room, has the gallery of portraits of Moldavia's rulers painted by Ștefan Dimitrescu and a marble fireplace carved with the country's historical tree; the "Henri Coandă" Hall, the former jury court, has a ceiling inspired by Westminster Hall.
The Art Museum keeps around 10,000 works, from Tonitza, Pallady and Băncilă to canvases by Rubens, Van Dyck and Poussin. The History Museum of Moldavia shows painted Cucuteni pottery, Dacian and Roman finds and the Iași Hoard, the largest medieval coin hoard in Moldavia, with over 14,000 coins. The Ethnographic Museum of Moldavia covers traditional occupations, folk costume and home textile crafts, while the "Ștefan Procopiu" Science and Technology Museum is the children's favourite: orchestrions and mechanical pianos that still play, gramophones, period telephones and radios, early computers and a reconstructed mine in the mineralogy section.
The Clock Tower can only be visited with a guide, in small groups, climbing the stairs up to the clock mechanism and the carillon bells.

The museums are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. The Hall of Honour, the Voivodes' Hall and the "Henri Coandă" Hall can also be seen in the evening, daily until 22:00, with a separate ticket.
