About Solomon's Rocks

Solomon's Rocks (Pietrele lui Solomon) are a group of limestone cliffs and towers in the forest at the edge of the Șchei district of Brașov, in the north-west of the Postăvarul massif, between Tâmpa and Stejerișul Mare. The Valea cu Apă stream, called the “Solomon river” by locals, runs through the middle of the area, forming a few small cascades and a narrow stretch between rock walls.

The name comes from a legend: King Solomon, chased by his enemies, is said to have leapt his horse across the chasm between two rocks and escaped, while his pursuers fell into the void. The story has no historical basis, and another version says the king had killed his brother. This is also where the “junii” of the Șchei district ride up on Thomas Sunday after riding down into the citadel, to throw the mace and dance the hora.

A 19th-century inn that fell into ruin stood at the entrance until recently; its last wall collapsed in October 2025.

Information verified on 24 October 2026.

  • The small cascades of the Solomon stream, stepping down over boulders.
  • The “Între Chietri” picnic area in the shade of the rocks, with tables.
  • The legend of Solomon's horse, said to have leapt the chasm between two rocks.
  • The forest road towards Poiana Brașov, for a longer hike on Postăvarul.

Getting there

By car: from central Brașov head for the Șchei district and drive up Drumul Vechi al Poienii to the end of the district, at the entrance to the Valea cu Apă valley; it is a few kilometres from Piața Sfatului. Higher up, the forest road towards Poiana Brașov is run by the forestry authority and can be closed after landslides.

On foot: the place is usually reached on foot from Șchei, along the road that climbs the stream valley; you can carry on along the forest road to Poiana Brașov.

Where to park

Next to the former inn there is a parking area and a roundabout, on private land according to the local press in 2023. It gets crowded on event days such as Thomas Sunday; come on foot from Șchei.

Rules

The forest road is used by pedestrians, cyclists and sometimes forestry machinery: give way to vehicles. Stay on the road and the existing paths, away from the rock walls, where stones can fall.
