Techirghiol
About Techirghiol
Techirghiol is a town of about 8,000 inhabitants (8,061 at the 2021 census), about 16 km from Constanța and ~3 km from the sea, on the northern shore of the lake of the same name. It was first mentioned in documents in 1560 and has been known as a spa resort since 1899. Romanians, Turks, Tatars, Aromanians and Roma live side by side, so the centre has a mosque, Orthodox churches, an Adventist one and an Apostolic one, and a monastery. Mircea Eliade's parents owned Villa Claudia here from 1906.
The town is, above all, a destination for treatment and longer stays. The Balneal and Rehabilitation Sanatorium has three wards (one sanatorium ward and two rehabilitation wards, one of them for children and young people aged 3–18), and a stay lasts 12 or 18 days, by appointment, for rheumatic, post-traumatic, neurological and gynaecological conditions. The lake, the mud and the Cold Baths have their own page: Lake Techirghiol.
What you can see
The Saint Mary Monastery, on Ovidiu Street, began in 1951 as a nuns' hermitage, in a villa bought in 1928 for a sanatorium for the clergy. In its yard stands the wooden church from around 1750, brought from the village of Maiorești (Mureș County), with a pointed bell tower, dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God and a category A historic monument; next to it are the new church, with domes crowned by golden crosses, and the statue of Saint Panteleimon by Ion Jalea.
In the centre are the Church of Saint Elijah, the German church (1934) and the Heroes' Monument in General I. Dragalina Square, inaugurated in 1931, a historic monument. Eforie Nord is ~4 km away, Eforie Sud ~7 km and Constanța ~16 km.
