Lutheran Church in Jelna
About Lutheran Church in Jelna
The Lutheran church in Jelna (Senndorf in German) stands in the centre of the village and belongs to a fortified ensemble of the Saxon type, made up of the church, a bell tower and an enclosure wall. The village had a Saxon community, and the church was for a long time its main building. The ensemble is listed as a historic monument under three separate entries: the church (ruins), the tower, and the enclosure wall with its entrance gate.
The church is a hall church. The choir and the altar apse are covered with Gothic ribbed vaults with corbels shaped like human heads, and fragments of 15th-century frescoes have been found under the plaster of the apse walls. The nave once had Baroque vaults, which collapsed long ago, and the building fell into ruin. Beside it rises the massive bell tower of the 16th century, which together with the circular enclosure formed the church's defences.
What you can see
The easiest part to see is the bell tower, with its pointed roof and storeys marked by bands of masonry, visible from all over the village centre. Around it are the apse with its Gothic windows, at times held up by scaffolding, the stone enclosure wall and the entrance gate with its shingled eaves. A playground set up nearby makes the spot a suitable stop for families too.
Good to know
The nave of the church has collapsed and the building has been propped up with consolidation scaffolding, so the interior is not a safe place to visit. The bell tower belongs to the village's Orthodox parish. No published visiting hours could be found; the ensemble is best admired from outside.
