About Huniade Castle
At a glance: Castles and palaces in Timișoara, Timiș County. The visit takes 20 min. Information verified on 8 October 2026.
Huniade Castle is the oldest building in Timișoara. King Charles Robert of Anjou moved his residence here in 1307, and the castle was built between 1308 and about 1315 on an island, linked to the fortified town by a drawbridge. He lived here for almost eight years, and the fortress long remained the residence of kings passing through Timișoara.
The shape we know comes from the late Middle Ages: after the 1443 earthquake, John Hunyadi (Iancu de Hunedoara), Count of Timișoara from 1441 to 1456, rebuilt the castle on the ruins of the Angevin one, to plans by the Italian architect Paolo Santini de Duccio, with semicircular towers for artillery. During the Ottoman occupation (1552–1716) it was the residence of the beylerbeys of the pashalik, and after 1716 the Austrians used it as barracks and a military depot. In 1849, during the siege of Timișoara, it was destroyed down to its foundations; today's building, in Romantic style with neo-Gothic details and exposed brick, was rebuilt by 1856. From 1947 it housed the history, archaeology and natural sciences sections of the National Museum of the Banat.
What you can see
The castle is closed to the public and can only be seen from the outside, from the park and square around it: a four-sided building with red-brick façades framed by pale stone, pointed-arch windows with white surrounds and crenellations with arcading under the eaves. It is worth a stroll along the walls towards the Maria Theresia Bastion, where the museum now keeps its administration and temporary exhibitions.
Good to know
The castle has been closed for years (sources give 2006 or 2007 as the year of closure) and is currently a building site. In August 2025 the works contract for a complete restoration was signed, funded from European funds and the Timiș County Council budget. In November 2025, stripping of the interiors uncovered medieval walls from the 14th–15th centuries, including a 14th-century keep in the inner courtyard. The county announces that some spaces could open in 2027 and the whole castle in 2028; the dates have slipped repeatedly in the past, so check the museum's website before planning a visit.
