Măieruș Fortified Church
About Măieruș Fortified Church
Măieruș (Nußbach in German, Szászmagyarós in Hungarian) appears in documents in 1377 under the Latin name Villa nucum, after the hazel bushes around it. The Evangelical church in the middle of the village was built in the 14th–15th centuries in the Gothic style and surrounded by an enclosure wall 6–8 m high, of which only fragments survive.
After a devastating fire, the church and the tower were rebuilt in 1573. The white bell tower, with its pyramidal tiled roof, dominates the complex, and its clock was fitted in 1929, replacing an older one with a wooden mechanism. On the south side is a Gothic pointed-arch portal with four recessed orders.
What you can see
The interior mixes styles from several periods: Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Classicist elements. The neoclassical altar of the early 19th century is joined to the organ, built by the Rieger brothers in 1907 and fully repaired in 2014. The pulpit is built into the wall and has a Baroque wooden canopy, while the galleries and pews are painted blue and green. There is also a stone font and, in the yard, stretches of the old enclosure wall covered in ivy.
Good to know
The church is a place of worship in use by the Evangelical community; the interior is visited by arrangement with the parish, so it is wise to let them know before you set out.
