Roman Fort of Orheiu Bistriței
About Roman Fort of Orheiu Bistriței
The village of Orheiu Bistriței, some 10 km south-east of Bistrița, stands right on top of a Roman fort: both the village's German name, Burghalle, and that of the commune, Cetate ("fortress"), come from it. The stone fort, about 203 × 144 m (2.9 ha), lay on the western bank of the Budac river and, in the 2nd and 3rd centuries, guarded the eastern end of the northern limes of Dacia Porolissensis, on the road between the forts at Ilișua and Brâncovenești. The 18 stamped bricks found in the command buildings show that cohors I Flavia Hispanorum milliaria was stationed here, an auxiliary unit of a thousand men with a cavalry detachment. A recent hypothesis links it to the ancient settlement of Triphulum.
The first fort was of earth and timber, later replaced by a stone one, with a wall about 1.30 m thick and a ditch 6 m wide. The excavations of 1957–1960, led by Mihail Macrea and then by Dumitru Protase, investigated the headquarters building, the commander's house, with rooms heated by a hypocaust, a side gate and a brick kiln in the Budac valley. The coins found range from Trajan to Severus Alexander. In 1909, during the renovation of the Lutheran church, a 2nd-century hoard came to light; most of it was lost in 1944.
What you can see
Above ground, almost nothing of the fort can be seen. The stone of the walls was removed over the centuries and used for the village houses, and a large part of the enclosure now lies under houses and gardens. A visit means a walk through the centre of the village, which grew along two perpendicular streets with the church at the crossing. The north-west corner of the fort lay next to this church, formerly Lutheran and now Orthodox, and part of the rear of the fort lies under the old Lutheran cemetery, no longer in use.
Good to know
Since 2024 the fort has been part of "Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Dacia", inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, as the component "Orheiu Bistriței – Vatra Satului" (the village core). In early 2025, archaeologists of the Bistrița-Năsăud Museum Complex carried out the first geophysical and ground-penetrating radar surveys here, on the western side of the fort and in the area of the civil settlement. The site has no announced opening hours, ticket or visitor facilities, and the land is mostly private property: the yards cannot be visited.
