Victory Square, Piața Victoriei, which locals also call Opera Square, is a pedestrian esplanade about 300 metres long, with two paved walkways and a garden promenade in the middle, linking the Opera to the north with the Metropolitan Cathedral to the south. In the 18th century the site was occupied by the Petrovaradin Gate and the fortifications of the fortress; their demolition began in 1899, and the boulevard was named after King Ferdinand until 1948, then "30 December". The tram lines were removed only in 1988–1989, when it became fully pedestrian.
It was here, on 20 December 1989, from the balcony of the Opera, that Timișoara was declared the first city free of communism, and the square has remained the city's place of remembrance. You will find the story of the Revolution developed at the Revolution Memorial; in the square it is above all the place itself that matters, with the balcony of the Opera.
What you can see
At the north end, the Palace of Culture, known as the Opera, closes the vista: it was designed by Fellner and Helmer, opened in 1875, burned in 1880 and again in 1920, and Duiliu Marcu rebuilt it and gave it its present façade in the 1930s, with a travertine arch above the balcony. The building houses the Romanian Opera, the "Mihai Eminescu" National Theatre, the German State Theatre and the "Csiky Gergely" Hungarian State Theatre. The rehabilitation of the façade began in 2019, in preparation for 2023, when Timișoara was European Capital of Culture.
Two promenades run along the square. On the right, towards the cathedral, is the "Corso", with the Weiss Palace, the Lloyd Palace from 1910 (today the rectorate of the Polytechnic, with a restaurant on the ground floor), the Dauerbach Palace and, at the end, the Széchenyi Palace. On the left, the "Surogat" begins with the Löffler Palace, from 1912. On the axis of the square stand a replica of the Capitoline Wolf, given by Rome in 1926, on a 5-metre pillar, and the Fish Fountain, from 1957, while to the south rises the Metropolitan Cathedral, described on its own page.
Good to know
Following an international design competition concluded in 2023, Timișoara City Hall chose the redevelopment project of the Studio Arca and Prodid team; on the City Hall's official page, the investment is at the stage of negotiating the design contract, with no schedule for the works. The Opera sometimes organises guided tours of the building, going up on the stage and onto the balcony, announced on the institution's website.
