The nearest salt mine to Bucharest is Slănic Prahova, about 100 km away; to Cluj-Napoca, Turda, 30 km away; to Sibiu, Ocnele Mari, 110 km away; to Iași, Cacica, 165 km away; to Brașov, Slănic Prahova (85 km) or Târgu Ocna (126 km). From Timișoara, Oradea and Constanța no salt mine is less than three hours away: the nearest is Turda for the west and Slănic for the coast.

The sums are simple, because in 2026 only five salt mines can be visited: Turda, Slănic Prahova, Ocnele Mari, Târgu Ocna and Cacica. Praid Salt Mine has been closed since May 2025, and Ocna Dej does not admit visitors. Below is the table for 22 cities, then, region by region, which one to choose and how to get there without a car. What you see in each salt mine, prices and depths are in the guide to the salt mines of Romania and on each salt mine's own page.

In short

  • The nearest salt mine to Bucharest is Slănic Prahova, about 100 km from the north of the city, roughly two hours by car; from Ploiești it is 40 km.
  • The nearest salt mine to Cluj-Napoca is Turda, 30 km away; Turda is also the nearest salt mine to Alba Iulia, Târgu Mureș, Oradea, Timișoara and Arad.
  • From Brașov there are two options: Slănic Prahova, about 85 km away, and Târgu Ocna, 126 km away, over the Oituz Pass.
  • The nearest salt mine to Sibiu is Ocnele Mari, about 110 km away along the Olt Valley; Ocna Sibiului, 15 km away, has salt lakes, not a salt mine.
  • The nearest salt mine to Iași and Suceava is Cacica (165 km and 35 km respectively); to Bacău, Târgu Ocna (60 km); to Craiova and Pitești, Ocnele Mari.
  • From Constanța the nearest salt mine is Slănic Prahova, about 330 km and 4 hours away; from Timișoara, Turda, about 285 km away.
  • In October 2026 five salt mines can be visited: Turda, Slănic Prahova, Ocnele Mari, Târgu Ocna and Cacica. Praid has been closed since May 2025, and Ocna Dej does not admit visitors.

The nearest salt mine to each major city

The table only counts the salt mines that can be visited at the end of October 2026. Distances are by road, from the city centre to the salt mine entrance, and the times assume clear roads: in summer and at weekends, on the Prahova Valley, the Olt Valley and the DN1 towards Turda, add half an hour or more.

The distances from Bucharest, Ploiești, Cluj-Napoca, Sibiu, Iași, Craiova, Bacău, Suceava, Târgu Mureș, Alba Iulia and Brașov–Târgu Ocna are those given on the salt mine pages; the others are calculated on OpenStreetMap maps (OSRM), October 2026, rounded. Praid (closed) and Ocna Dej (no visitors) are not counted.

Salt mine near Bucharest and Ploiești: Slănic Prahova

From Bucharest you take the A3 or the DN1 to Ploiești, about an hour, then another 40 km on county roads, via Plopeni or Vălenii de Munte, to Slănic Prahova Salt Mine, in the north of the town of Slănic. From the north of Bucharest it is about 100 km, from the centre 115–120 km. The second-nearest salt mine is Ocnele Mari, 180 km away, on the A1 and through the Olt Valley: it works for a weekend, less well for a day.

Ploiești has no salt mine. ‘Ploiești salt mine’ is a frequent search, but the nearest is still Slănic, 40 km away, about 45 minutes. Likewise, the ‘Vălenii de Munte salt mine’ is a salt room in the town, not a mine: the real salt mine is about 16 km away.

If you want salt water rather than galleries, the Telega Salt Baths, 6 km from Câmpina and about 40 km from Ploiești, have salt lakes formed on the site of old salt workings, with a lido in summer.

Salt mine near Cluj-Napoca: Turda, 30 km away

Turda Salt Mine is 30 km south of Cluj-Napoca, on the A3 (Turda exit) or the DN1, about 35 minutes. In your satnav search for ‘Salina Turda Durgău’, the new entrance, not the old entrance in the town. It is also the nearest salt mine to Alba Iulia (65 km on the A10), Târgu Mureș (70 km on the A3) and Deva (about 150 km).

Closer to Cluj, 55 km away, is Ocna Dej Salt Mine, but there Salrom cuts salt and does not admit visitors: it is not an alternative to Turda. From Baia Mare and Bistrița, Turda remains the nearest open salt mine, 175 km and about 125 km away respectively. There is no salt mine to visit in Maramureș: at Ocna Șugatag, 50 km from Baia Mare, the old mines are flooded and have become salt lakes.

For a dip in salt water near Cluj there are Băile Cojocna, 24 km away, and, right next to the salt mine, the Durgău Salt Lakes.

Salt mine near Brașov: Slănic Prahova or Târgu Ocna

Brașov lies halfway between two salt mines. Slănic Prahova is the nearest, about 85 km away, roughly two hours. Târgu Ocna is 126 km away, on the DN11 via Târgu Secuiesc and the Oituz Pass, then on the DN12A, roughly two and a half hours. In time they are close, so you choose by what you want to see: the huge halls at Slănic, over 50 m high, or the bus ride down to 240 m at Târgu Ocna.

Until 2025 many people from Brașov went to Praid, about 140 km away. Praid Salt Mine has been closed since May 2025 and has no reopening date; the details are in the salt mines guide.

From Sfântu Gheorghe and Miercurea Ciuc the nearest salt mine is Târgu Ocna Salt Mine, about 105 km and 95 km away respectively. Anyone searching for a ‘Harghita salt mine’ has the same option: Praid, the only salt mine in the county, is closed.

Salt mine near Sibiu: Ocnele Mari or Turda

The nearest salt mine to Sibiu is Ocnele Mari Salt Mine, near Râmnicu Vâlcea: about 100 km on the DN7, along the Olt Valley, to Vâlcea, plus 8 km to the salt mine, about two hours in all. The second option is Turda, about 150 km away, roughly two and a quarter hours, so almost the same in time. Bear in mind that the DN7 along the Olt Valley is busy at weekends and in season, with queues of traffic.

Ocna Sibiului has no salt mine. It is the most searched-for mix-up in the area: at Ocna Sibiului, 15 km from Sibiu, the old salt workings collapsed and filled with water, and they are now salt lakes with a lido, the deepest of which, Avram Iancu, is about 130 m deep. You go for a swim, not underground.

Salt mine near Iași and Suceava: Cacica

From Iași the nearest salt mine is Cacica Salt Mine, in Bukovina, about 165 km away, roughly three hours. Târgu Ocna is about 210 km away, roughly three and a half hours: choose Cacica if you want an old mine, dug by hand, down 192 steps, and Târgu Ocna if you have small children or someone who finds climbing hard, because there you go down by bus.

From Suceava Cacica is 35 km away, and from Botoșani about 95 km. From Piatra Neamț both are a little over two hours away: Târgu Ocna about 100 km, Cacica about 115 km. Cacica combines easily with the Voroneț Monastery, Humor Monastery and Sucevița Monastery.

Salt mine near Bacău, Onești and Slănic Moldova: Târgu Ocna

Târgu Ocna Salt Mine is 60 km from Bacău (DN11 to Onești, then DN12A) and 14 km from Onești. Anyone searching for a ‘Bacău salt mine’ will find salt rooms in the city; the real mine is at Târgu Ocna.

There is no ‘Slănic Moldova salt mine’: the resort of Slănic-Moldova has mineral springs, and the salt mine people go to from there is again Târgu Ocna, 18 km down the valley.

Târgu Ocna is also the nearest salt mine to Galați and Brăila, about 190 km away, roughly three and a half hours, with Slănic Prahova as the second option, 210–230 km away. Near Brăila, 5 km away, there is instead the Lacu Sărat Resort, with a salt lake and mud, if you want salt water without a long drive. From Focșani Târgu Ocna is about 105 km away.

Salt mine near Râmnicu Vâlcea, Craiova and Pitești: Ocnele Mari

For the whole of Oltenia and Argeș the salt mine is Ocnele Mari Salt Mine: 8 km from Râmnicu Vâlcea, about 125 km from Craiova (on the DN64), about 75 km from Pitești and about 105 km from Târgu Jiu. In your satnav search for ‘Salina Ocnele Mari’, not ‘Salina veche’ (the old salt mine), which is in another part of the town.

Two spa resorts in Vâlcea often appear in searches with ‘salt mine’, although they do not have one. Băile Govora has iodine and bromine waters, used for baths and inhalations, and Călimănești-Căciulata has sulphurous springs and thermal-water lidos in the Olt Valley. From both, Ocnele Mari is less than half an hour away: about 15 km from Govora, about 25 km from Călimănești.

Salt mine near Timișoara, Arad and Oradea: the nearest is Turda

The west of the country has no salt mine to visit. The nearest, from all three cities, is Turda Salt Mine: about 190 km from Oradea (about 3 hours and a quarter), about 285 km from Timișoara and about 320 km from Arad (around 3 and a half hours). It is a weekend trip, not an afternoon one: Turda's last entry is at 16:20, so if you leave Timișoara after lunch you will not make the visit.

A ‘salt mine’ in a city is usually a salt room, not a mine. Băile Felix, 8 km from Oradea, has thermal springs, not a salt mine, and Băile Herculane has no salt mine: from there the nearest is Ocnele Mari, about 215 km away, roughly 4 hours.

Salt mine near Constanța: Slănic Prahova, 4 hours away

Dobruja has no salt mine. From Constanța the nearest is Slănic Prahova Salt Mine, about 330 km away, roughly 4 hours; Ocnele Mari is about 430 km away. If you are heading for Bucharest anyway, Slănic can be added to the journey, with a night on the way.

What the coast has instead is salt water on the surface: Lake Techirghiol, 15 km south of Constanța, the largest salt lake in Romania, with cold baths and sapropelic mud in summer. It is not a salt mine, but it is what many of those who ask about a ‘salt mine near the sea’ are looking for.

‘Sovata salt mine’, ‘Ocna Mureș salt mine’: places where there is no salt mine

Besides Ocna Sibiului, Telega, Cojocna and Govora, above, two places in central Transylvania are often searched for with ‘salt mine’:

  • Sovata: Lake Ursu is a salt lake, and Praid Salt Mine, 7 km away, has been closed since May 2025. The nearest open salt mine is Turda, about 130 km away, roughly two hours.
  • Ocna Mureș: the Ocna Mureș Salt Baths have salt-water pools, and the former salt mine cannot be visited. Turda is 25 km away.

And in Bacău, Buzău, Reșița or Vălenii de Munte, the town's ‘salt mine’ is a salt room, a room lined with salt, with no connection to a mine. The difference between a salt mine, salt baths and a salt room is explained in the salt mines guide.

Day trip to a salt mine: what time you need to arrive

The last descent is 1–1.5 hours before closing, so with two or three hours of driving you set off in the morning. The times are those published for October 2026; opening hours change monthly, so check the salt mine's page.

  • Turda: open daily, all year round, last entry at 16:20.
  • Slănic Prahova: the first minibus goes down at 09:15, the last at 15:30; outside the school holidays, closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
  • Ocnele Mari: on weekdays last entry at 14:30, at weekends at 15:30; in autumn usually closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
  • Târgu Ocna: open daily, last trip underground at 15:00 (16:00 in summer).
  • Cacica: in October closed on Mondays; in winter usually on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The visit itself takes from an hour and a half (Cacica) to two and a half hours (Turda, Slănic, Ocnele Mari), plus the wait for the lift or the minibuses at weekends.

How to get to a salt mine without a car

  • Slănic Prahova, from Bucharest: train or bus to Ploiești, then the minibuses to Slănic, which leave roughly every half hour from the Ploiești Nord bus station and take about an hour; from the town you walk or take a taxi to the salt mine.
  • Turda, from Cluj-Napoca: frequent minibuses from the area of the Beta bus station and Piața Mihai Viteazu, in about 45 minutes, then local bus 17 or a taxi, about 3 km to the Durgău entrance.
  • Ocnele Mari: train or coach to Râmnicu Vâlcea, then the Vilextur buses from the Obadă bus station, or a taxi.
  • Târgu Ocna: it is on the Adjud – Siculeni railway line; get off at the Saline halt, about 700 m from the entrance.
  • Cacica: train to Gura Humorului, then the minibus towards Solca, which passes through Cacica, or a taxi; direct services from Suceava are rare.

For Cacica and Ocnele Mari check the timetable beforehand: connections are few.
