The nearest cave to each city

The table only counts caves that can be visited at the end of October 2026: developed, with a guide or with free access. Distances are by road, from the city centre to the car park or road closest to the cave; many add a stretch on foot, shown in the third column. Times assume clear roads: at weekends and in summer, on the DN1, the Rucăr–Bran corridor and the Olt Valley, add half an hour or more.

Caves near Bucharest: Ialomița, Valea Cetății, Dâmbovicioara

The nearest is Ialomița Cave: 125 km on the DN1 to Sinaia, then 32 km on the Transbucegi and past Lake Bolboci to Hotel Peștera, from where you walk down one kilometre. The 480 lit metres are walked without a guide; in winter the access road is difficult.

On the DN1, past Predeal, Valea Cetății Cave is about 180 km away, roughly 2 h 45, without the mountain stretch. Through Bran come the Bat Cave at Moieciu, about 195 km away, and Dâmbovicioara Cave, about 200 km away, roughly 3 h 15, via Pitești and Câmpulung.

To the west, Polovragi Cave and the Women's Cave, in Gorj, are about 250 km away, nearly four hours: fine for a weekend, not for a day. Towards the coast, St Andrew's Cave, a cave church, is about 200 km away, roughly three hours.

Caves near Brașov: Valea Cetății, Râșnoavei, Moieciu, Dâmbovicioara

Brașov has four caves less than an hour and a half away. Valea Cetății Cave is on the road between Râșnov and Poiana Brașov, 18 km via Poiana, about 30 minutes; from the car park you climb 450 m through the forest. You go in only with the guide, every 30 minutes, without booking.

Râșnoavei Cave, also on Postăvarul, is wild: from Râșnov you walk up for about an hour and go in only with a guide or caver, from May to October. The Bat Cave at Moieciu, about 40 km away, roughly 50 minutes, has free access, with your own torch. Dâmbovicioara Cave, about 55 km away, roughly an hour and a half, via Bran, has 250 developed metres and can be visited all year.

Ialomița Cave is about 80 km away, roughly two hours. Bolii Cave, near Petroșani, is about 290 km away, over five hours: not a day trip from Brașov.

The nearest cave to Cluj is Huda lui Papară Cave, about 85 km away, 1 h 45, via Turda. It has no walkways: you go in only on guided tours, in a wetsuit, along the underground river, with a booking; tours for autumn 2026 are not officially confirmed, so call ahead.

Caves in Sibiu County: are there any?

"Caves in Sibiu County" is one of the top cave searches in Romania, but the county has no show cave and none on the county page. Some of the searches also come from a club in Sibiu called "Peștera Vikingilor" (the Vikings' Cave): it is a venue, not a cave.

To visit a cave you leave the county: towards Brașov, towards Vâlcea and Gorj or towards Hunedoara, at the distances in the section above.

At Băile Herculane, about 190 km away, roughly three hours, the Thieves' Cave (Peștera Hoților) is free, five minutes from the hotel. In the Danube Gorge, about 230–245 km away, Veterani Cave is visited only by boat, from May to October, while you enter Ponicova Cave from a boat or on foot from the Ponicova Gorge, with gear for a wet cave.

Caves near Sinaia, Bran and Râșnov

From Sinaia, Ialomița Cave is 32 km away, about an hour, on the Transbucegi; without a car you take the cable car from Bușteni to Babele and then the Babele – Peștera cable car. Valea Cetății Cave is about 40 km away, also about an hour, on the DN1.

Caves near Sovata: Șugău and the Vârghiș Gorge

There is no show cave near Sovata. The nearest is Șugău Cave, near Gheorgheni, about 70 km away, roughly an hour and a half, plus a steep 10–15 minute climb: you go in only with a guide, with the operator's torches, daily except Monday in July–August and only at weekends, by booking, for the rest of the year.

The "salt cave" at Turda is Turda Salt Mine, a salt mine, not a cave: opening hours and prices are in the guide to the salt mines of Romania.

Ialomița Cave, Peștera village, Hotel Peștera: which is which

"Peștera" (Romanian for "cave") is also a place name, and searches get mixed up:

  • Ialomița Cave is the cave in the Bucegi, with the monastery at its entrance, in Moroeni commune (Dâmbovița). It is also called Ialomicioara Cave. Hotel Peștera and the Padina – Peștera area are one kilometre above it, and the Babele – Peștera cable car comes down there.
  • Peștera village, in Moieciu commune (Brașov), is a different place, about 90 km from Ialomița Cave by road. Ten minutes' walk from the village is the Bat Cave at Moieciu. When you search for "Peștera Brașov", the results are often about this village.
  • Peștera commune in Constanța County is a locality, not a cave. The caves you can visit in Dobruja, such as St Andrew's Cave, are in the guide to the caves.

On the GPS, for Ialomița Cave search for "Hotel Peștera, Moroeni" or "Mănăstirea Peștera Ialomiței", not just "Peștera".

A day trip to a cave: what time you need to arrive

In autumn and winter caves close earlier, and guided ones have their last entry an hour or more before closing. The times are those published for 2026; check the cave's page before you set off.

  • Closed in winter: the Bat Cave at Moieciu and Comarnic, from November to March, for the bats.

Dâmbovicioara is crowded in summer and at weekends, and Valea Cetății takes no bookings. At caves with guided tours at fixed times (Bears' Cave, Polovragi, Muierilor, Meziad), if you arrive between two departures, you wait for the next group. Temperature, jacket and footwear are in the practical part of the cave guide.
