Sledging, alpine coasters and tubing in Romania: where to go with a sledge

You go sledging on sledging slopes kept apart from the ski runs, which many of the ski areas on the site have: Bușteni (Kalinderu, with a chairlift up), Cavnic (a sledge park with its own chairlift), Toplița Ski Slope, Mărișel Ski Slopes, Arieșeni (free), Bucovina Ski Slope and others. The alpine coaster (a rail bobsled), which also runs in summer, is at Toplița, SkiGyimes, Băile Homorod, Cheile Grădiștei Fundata Ski Area and Predeal, while tubing (riding down on an inflatable ring) is at Fundata, Toplița, Șuior and Izvoare Mountain Resort, the last two all year round.
Below you'll find the table with every place, then in turn the Prahova Valley, the alpine coasters, the length record, tubing and what to know when you go with children. For skiing, see the guide to Romania's ski slopes; for children learning to ski, the slopes for beginners.
In short
- Sledging is only allowed on the slopes set aside for it: sledges are not allowed on the ski runs, a rule written down at Azuga, Toplița, Arieșeni, Muntele Băișorii and Bucovina Ski Slope.
- In the Prahova Valley, the published sledging slope is at Kalinderu, in Bușteni, with a chairlift up; at Predeal there is an 822 m summer toboggan next to the Clăbucet slope, opened in 2025.
- The alpine coaster runs all year, weather permitting, at Toplița Ski Slope and at SkiGyimes, both at 30 lei a ride for adults and 25 lei for children (November 2026).
- The longest alpine coaster whose length the operator publishes on its own website is the one at Cheile Grădiștei Fundata, about 1.6 km long; Toplița Ski Slope calls its track the longest in Romania but does not publish its length.
- Tubing costs 15 lei a ride at Cheile Grădiștei Fundata and 40 lei for 30 minutes at Izvoare Mountain Resort, where, as at Șuior, it also runs in summer (prices from November 2026).
- On the alpine coaster children are allowed from age 3, and up to age 7–8 they ride only with an adult, in the same sledge (Toplița, Cavnic, Fundata, SkiGyimes).
Sledging slopes in Romania: where to go with a sledge
A sledging slope is a short slope kept apart from the ski runs, usually next to the beginners' area, as at Toplița Ski Slope, where it is beside the conveyor belt, or at Băile Homorod, where it is 100 m long and meant for children. On some you walk up, on others a lift takes you: at Bușteni the Kalinderu chairlift, at Cavnic the sledge park's chairlift, at Zănoaga Ski Slope (Brava Park) a conveyor belt.
In Transylvania and the Apuseni Mountains there are separate sledging slopes at Mărișel Ski Slopes, Muntele Băișorii and Arieșeni, where the sledge slope next to Vârtop I is free. At Bucin Pass Ski Slopes one ride up the sledging slope costs one point on the card. In Bukovina, Bucovina Ski Slope and Șoimul Ski Slope have a separate slope, while at Durău the 406 m slope is for skiing and sledging at the same time. The most unusual place is Vulcan Pass: in winter, the road between the gondola and the chalets, closed to traffic, becomes a sledging run through the forest.

Sledging in the Prahova Valley and near Brașov
In the Prahova Valley, the only sledging slope with published access is at Kalinderu, in Bușteni: a separate slope, reached with the same chairlift as the ski run. At Azuga the rule is explicit: sledges are not allowed on the slopes. At Predeal, next to the Clăbucet slope, an 822 m summer toboggan on rails has been running since 2025, and you can ride it even when there is no snow. For Sinaia, the page lists no sledging slope.
Near Brașov there are two places on the road to Bran. Zănoaga Ski Slope (Brava Park), on the edge of Bran, has a 150 m sledging and tubing slope with a conveyor belt. Cheile Grădiștei Fundata Ski Area, at 1,300 m, has tubing on the plateau, sledges for hire and the alpine coaster of about 1.6 km.
From central Bucharest it is ~140 km (~2 h) to Sinaia, ~150 km to Bușteni, ~160 km (~2 h 15 min) to Predeal, ~190 km (~3 h) to Bran and ~200 km (~3 h 20 min) to Fundata, distances calculated on OpenStreetMap in November 2026, without weekend traffic. For other cities, see the nearest ski slopes.

Alpine coasters in Romania: where they are, winter and summer
An alpine coaster is a sledge that runs down on rails, with a brake within your reach; you get up to the start on its own lift or on the ski area's chairlift. Because it needs no snow, it also runs in summer.
- Toplița Ski Slope (Harghita): a track opened in 2021, through meadows and spruce trees, all year, even in the rain; single or double sledges, 30 lei a ride over age 14, 25 lei for children.
- SkiGyimes (Lunca de Sus, Harghita): open since 2018, daily 09:00–21:00, all year, with speeds of up to 45 km/h; in the evening the cars are lit up. Also 30 and 25 lei.
- Băile Homorod (Harghita): the Lobogó track, almost 1,000 m long, with four spirals and up to 45 km/h; the operator advertises daily hours of 09:00–21:00, with no booking.
- Cheile Grădiștei Fundata Ski Area (Brașov): an alpine coaster of about 1.6 km, with two climbs; 70 lei for adults, 50 lei for children; Mon–Thu 10:00–18:00, Fri–Sun 10:00–20:00.
- Predeal: the 822 m summer toboggan next to the Clăbucet slope.
- Cavnic (Maramureș): a 272 m summer coaster at Roata, new in 2026, with a chairlift up; 40 lei for 2 rides, at weekends, 11:00–19:00, until 22 November 2026.
The Red Lake and Borsec pages also mention a bobsled track, with no published details (a summer coaster at the Speranța complex), and at Straja the ski area's operator advertises the Baloo Coaster, open all year.

The longest alpine coaster in Romania
The answer depends on who gives it. Toplița Ski Slope presents its track as “the longest and most modern” in Romania, but publishes no length, so the claim cannot be compared. Of the tracks whose operator gives a figure on its website, the longest is the alpine coaster at Cheile Grădiștei Fundata Ski Area, about 1.6 km long after being extended by 600 m. Next comes SkiGyimes, which the operator gives as “1,200 + 600 m” without saying what each figure stands for, then the Lobogó track at Băile Homorod, almost 1,000 m long.
The Austrian manufacturer Sunkid presents the mountain coaster in Sinaia, opened on 1 December 2025, as the longest in Romania, with a 2,157 m descent; the ride is not yet described on the site's Sinaia page, and the local operator does not publish a page with its opening hours. For ski slopes, the records are in the guide to the longest ski slope in Romania.
| Track | Published length | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Sinaia (mountain coaster) | 2,157 m of descent | the manufacturer Sunkid |
| Cheile Grădiștei Fundata | ~1.6 km | cheilegradistei.ro |
| SkiGyimes | “1,200 + 600 m” | skigyimes.ro |
| Băile Homorod (Lobogó) | ~1,000 m | lobogo.ro |
| Predeal (summer toboggan) | 822 m | the Predeal page |
| Cavnic (summer coaster) | 272 m | superskicavnic.ro |
| Toplița Ski Slope | not published | partiatoplita.ro |
Lengths as given by the operators or the manufacturer, checked on 3 November 2026; they are not measured the same way (some include the climb).
Tubing in Romania: where to ride down on a ring
Tubing means riding down on an inflatable ring, on a separate run, usually with a conveyor belt or a drag lift to go back up. In winter you'll find it at Cheile Grădiștei Fundata Ski Area (15 lei for one ride, 40 lei for three, 50 lei for five), Toplița Ski Slope (since 2022), Zănoaga Ski Slope (Brava Park), Muntele Băișorii, Feleacu Ski Slope, ~10 km from Cluj-Napoca, Șoimul Ski Slope and in the park at Icoana in Cavnic, with snow-tubing slides.
Without depending on snow, it runs at Izvoare Mountain Resort, at 40 lei for 30 minutes and 60 lei for an hour (family ring 50 and 70 lei), at Șuior, with two runs at Cota 1000, also open in summer, and at Gărâna. In summer there is also tubing at Durău, in the leisure park, and in amusement parks such as Brambura Park, at 10 lei a ride, where long trousers and closed shoes are recommended. Prices are from November 2026.

Sledging with children: separate slopes and age limits
For young children, the best choices are short, separate slopes: the 100 m sledging slope at Băile Homorod, made for little ones, the 150 m slope with a conveyor belt at Zănoaga Ski Slope (Brava Park) and the sledge park at Cavnic, where the sledge is included in the price: 20 lei for 2 rides for children up to 14, 30 lei for adults.
On the alpine coaster, age matters. At Toplița Ski Slope children are allowed from age 3, and up to age 8 only in the double sledge, with a companion over 8 and at least 1.35 m tall, who sits at the back and brakes. At Cavnic the rule is the same (from age 3, under 8 with an adult), at Cheile Grădiștei Fundata Ski Area children aged 3 to 7 ride only with an adult, and at SkiGyimes those aged 3 to 12 or under 135 cm ride only when accompanied. Under-3s are not allowed anywhere the operator publishes the rule.

Alpine coaster or Olympic bobsleigh: what you're looking for
When you search for a “bobsled track” or “bobsleigh in Romania” as a family outing, you are looking for the alpine coaster: an attraction for anyone over 3, which runs in winter and summer. The Olympic bobsleigh is something else: a competitive sport, with teams racing down an ice channel. The only internationally certified competition bobsleigh track in Romania was the one at Sinaia, built in 1974–1976 and now derelict; it has no page on the site and is not a leisure attraction.
Likewise, “summer toboggan” (sanie de vară) is the name given at Predeal to a track on rails, not to a snow slope. And sledges are not used on ski runs: where there are only ski slopes, without a sledging slope, the place is not suitable for sledging.
What to know before you go sledging
- The sledge stays on its own slope. At Azuga, Toplița Ski Slope, Arieșeni, Muntele Băișorii and Bucovina Ski Slope the rule is written down: no sledging on the ski runs.
- Not every sledge is accepted. In the sledge park at Cavnic sledges brought from outside are not accepted, and at Havas Bucsin, at Bucin Pass Ski Slopes, sledges with a metal frame are banned; there, hiring one requires an identity document.
- Sledges for hire are available at Mărișel Ski Slopes (40 lei), Arieșeni, Băile Homorod, Harghita-Băi and Cheile Grădiștei Fundata Ski Area.
- On the alpine coaster you wear the seat belt, keep your distance from the sledge in front (at least 25 m at Toplița) and do not use your phone; weight is limited (150 kg per sledge at Toplița, 120 kg at Cavnic), and pregnant women are not allowed at Toplița.
- The coaster stops in bad weather, even when it is advertised as open all year: at Cavnic the schedule is suspended in the rain, so call ahead.
When the slopes usually open and where the snow comes first, you'll find in the guide to the ski season.
